At the Speed of Sunlight is an initiative promoted by AdEPorto - Porto Energy Agency, through an experimental activity, in partnership with the Associated Municipalities of Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Paredes, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Santo Tirso, Trofa, Valongo and Vila do Conde, with the objective of raising awareness among young people and increasing the interest and knowledge of competitors in the different technologies used to convert renewable energy sources.
This initiative includes the design and construction of small-scale solar powered cars during the school year, using the kit offered by the organization (which, depending on the level of participation, includes one or more solar panels and one or more engines), and the subsequent racing of the constructed cars at a lively municipal and intermunicipal race, under the scope of the celebrations of the Energy and Environment Week - SEA, which usually take place from May 29 (Energy Day) to June 5 (Environment Day).
The At the Speed of Sunlight initiative is aimed at all students in the 2nd and 3rd Cycles of Basic Education (tier 1 participants), and in Secondary and Professional Education (tier 2 participants) who attend educational establishments in one of the Associated Municipalities of Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Paredes, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Santo Tirso, Trofa, Valongo and Vila do Conde.
