Open applications: “European Green Capital” and “European Green Leaf”
Applications for the 2024 “European Green Capital” and “European Green Leaf” awards are open until March 25th. These awards, launched by the European Commission, distinguish cities that are committed to adopting actions that promote ecological sustainability and improve the quality of life of populations.
Both prizes are awarded to cities in EU Member States, EU candidate countries and also Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The difference between the two lies in the size of the cities: the “European Green Capital” award is intended for cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, while the “European Green Leaf” of 2024 is open to urban centers from 20,000 to 99,999 inhabitants.
To be eligible for the awards, candidate cities must submit a record of measures taken to achieve ambitious environmental goals and to accelerate sustainable development. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of different indicators, from air quality to waste and water management to energy performance.
The Porto Energy Agency encourages applications from partner municipalities to these initiatives. It is worth remembering, in this context, that the municipality of Valongo was distinguished last year with the European Green Leaf award.
